Spazzapan. Fondo Milva Biolcati / Maurizio Corgnati
Galleria Spazzapan
11 December 2021

Five paintings by Luigi Spazzapan have lately enriched the collections of the Regional Gallery for Contemporary Art dedicated to the great artist who was born in Gradisca d’Isonzo.
The paintings are part of the fund “Milva Biolcati - Maurizio Corgnati”, which Martina Corgnati, art historian and daughter of the great singer and theatre actress from Goro and the well-known director, documentary filmmaker and writer form Turin, gifted to the Gallery.
These are Pesci sul tavolo (1932), La camicia bianca (1935 c.), Deposizione (con angelo) (1945), Cosma e Damiano benedicenti (1951), Santone (evangelista) (1955-56), which are pieces that are significantly representative for artistic and research career of Luigi Spazzapan, who after a period of working activity in the area around the Isonzo river, moved to Turin in 1928, where he remained for the rest of his life.
The five works of the fondo “Milva Biolcati/Maurizio Corgnati” are displayed on the second floor of the Spazzapan Gallery, together with a selection of works from Giletti and Citelli collections, in a set-up which recalls Spazzapan’s entire artistic journey: from the first references to Expressionism which are condensed in the incisiveness of the sign and the strength of colours, to the softer strokes of French Impressionism, towards which the artist turned after his arrival in Turin; from the geometric structures of the 1940s to his last informal phase, all focused on the predominance of colour over line.
Given the importance of the donation and in order to allow a wide visibility of these new works, entrance to the Spazzapan Gallery is free of charge until 13.3.2022.
Thanks to the collaboration of Rai Teche, during the exhibition, visitors can watch the film Ricordo di Luigi Spazzapan, made by Maurizio Corgnati in 1956, which is a valuable audio-visual document with historical testimonies by, among others, Lionello Venturi and Jettà Donegà.
To further enrich the spaces of the Gallery and the exhibition itinerary, there is the permanent "CariGo GREEN POINT", organised by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Gorizia and created by IKON digital Farm, which, thanks to VR-Virtual Reality with headphones and visor, allows visitors to take a surprising, highly immersive and emotional journey into Luigi Spazzapan's world.
The donation to the Gallery, managed by ERPAC FVG - Ente Regionale Patrimonio Culturale del Friuli Venezia Giulia with the Municipality of Gradisca d'Isonzo and the fundamental support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Gorizia, enriches the public cultural heritage and will perpetuate the close bond between Martina Corgnati's parents and one of the greatest exponents of the Italian artistic scene of the 20th century.
