As AMACI's day is dedicated to ecology and sustainability, we will try to illustrate artist Luciano Caggianello's research in relation to the ecology and sustainability of conceptual thinking.
The current being of art, or perhaps that perception of its being current, leads beyond a defect of understanding, and this lack of cognitive engagement claims and shapes a negative judgment in that contemporary art is perceived as an absolute and perfect insignificance, as a displayed and exhibited nothingness. This is the incorrect premise that often concurs in defining the perimeter of contemporary art.
Art, on the other hand, especially conceptual art, always represents the attachment of a message and is constantly relevant and permutable toward the reality of the everyday. The idea becomes the component and foundational parameter of "art making" and constitutes the work of art in itself, even when it does not physically materialize. Thought is thus the main protagonist and essence of conceptualism, and already this aspect makes it osmotic to the theme because respecting its perimeters also means applying a strong connotation of thought.
The artistic parameter assumes aesthetic validity because of its intrinsic condition and inherent conceptual poignancy. When it becomes excessively realistic, craving for referentiality, bulimic of a pressing and conforming everyday life, it turns into trompe l'oèil and thus, if it claims to certify that parameter of minute resemblance, it loses its qualifying fascination and derubricates its possible and bewitching narrative. True aesthetics is assimilated not to representation but to presentation. And it is precisely in this context of everyday presentation that the intelligence of sustainability moves, thus endorsing this parallelism. In fact, ecology and sustainability should not depict themselves as a polaroid to which they remain attached for the ages but should be able to interpret themselves in relation to a continuous change capable of satisfying the findings of an evolving world, just as art in general and conceptual art specifically tends to structure itself.
