“A mano libera” is a drawing competition promoted by the Spazio Lavì Cultural Association of Bologna. It responds to the aim of searching for the works of those who still - in the digital age and of images derived from photographic and video tools - intend to represent reality through drawing.
The competition, in its second edition, is aimed at all those who see freehand drawing, even in the form of a sketch, as an expressive method not to be forgotten and is open to anyone of legal age. Works created with traditional techniques (for example pencils, charcoal, markers, pens, ink, collage, etc.) on paper or other two-dimensional supports are permitted.
With this competition, Spazio Lavì operates within the typical scope of its activity, namely the representation of the landscape, architecture and city; within these themes, participation in the competition is permitted with figurative and abstract works. Comics, graphic novels and all genres that involve narrative seriality are excluded.
For the sole purpose of limiting the field of action and obtaining the greatest possible uniformity of the materials sent, a theme was proposed for the second edition, drawing it from a daily experience typical of these years: restlessness.
The works were examined using criteria that took into account the originality of the works, the communicative capacity of the drawing and the technical expertise of the author. The jury is made up of teachers from the Academies of Fine Arts and Schools of Architecture and art critics: Walter Cascio, Davide Catania, Paolo Gobbi, Marina Mentoni, Piero Orlandi and Annamaria Santarcangelo.
At the end of its work, the jury selected the work to which to award the purchase prize of 500 euros: it is the work by Ilaria Marchetti entitled "Il rumore del fondo". The jury also highlighted two works by Roberto Carboni and Thomas Gazzola. Furthermore, the works of the other six finalists will be exhibited in an exhibition that opens in the Association's exhibition venue, Lavì! City, in via Sant'Apollonia 19/a in Bologna, on the occasion of Amaci's Contemporary Day, next Saturday 7 October at 5.30 pm and will remain open from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm every day except Sundays until 21 October .
