On the occasion of Giornata del Contemporaneo, saturday October 7th, 2023, with WANDERING BAISHIZHOU, Sabrina Muzi, makes us relive an experience deep inside, through the moving images of her film. In Shenzen, among the largest megacities in China, the artist spent a month inside the village of Baishizhou, a place full of contradictions and social stratifications, considered a real self-sufficient community, where it is possible to meet any need and carry out different activities.

Thanks to an artistic residency, Sabrina lived in one of the characteristic "handshakes buildings," lodgings so called because the buildings are so close together that the different inhabitants can look out and shake hands with each other. From this 12-square-meter studio apartment, an ethnographic investigation began for Muzi, which involved several alternating phases of field study in the very special place, which is currently in danger of disappearing because of the decision made by the central government to tear down the urban village to allow for a major urban redevelopment operation. The project involves the construction of luxury hotels and more competitively priced housing, which will result in the distortion of a diverse and vibrant community now characterized by students and workers. Through an evocative performance inspired by the spirituality of the place,Sabrina Muzi addressed the emergency and the danger of its disappearance, with the intention of engaging the community and leaving a meaningful trace of what is destined to disappear. It was an innovative project involving and involving the residents of Baishizhou, articulated through moving images.
