Descrizione

As part of its activities, the MACA opens to the public with a rich program of events and guided tours. On October 12, 2024, for the 20th Contemporary Day, an initiative promoted by AMACI (Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums), the new display of the Turi Simeti collection, which the artist donated to his hometown between the late 1990s and 2019, will be opened to the public in collaboration with the Turi Simeti Archive Foundation, along with the closing event of the exhibition Portals and Space-Time, with the participation of the artists Andrea Sala, Francesco Simeti, and Matilde Cassani.

In the context of the Gulf of Castellammare, a territory with a complex history that includes a post-rural landscape, mafia criminal phenomena, tourism vocation, building abuses, lack of public services, and valuable artistic and cultural heritage, the cultural regeneration path promoted by Landescape in collaboration with the Municipality of Alcamo is set in motion.

Alcamo and the province of Trapani, with their complex and layered landscape, social, economic, and political history, become a strategic scenario for promoting reflections on the relationship between art, common goods, and social innovation.

In this context, the MACA - Museum of Contemporary Art of Alcamo stands out as an institutional model that, since 2021, has taken an experimental curatorial direction, entrusted to the Landescape collective. The collaboration with the Municipality of Alcamo, through the activation of a public-private partnership for the management of the MACA and the connected production spaces, Casa degli Artisti – a property confiscated from the Mafia – and Fablab, has transformed the MACA into a center for artistic production and reflection. The museum acts as a reference point for promoting practices that communities can implement in relation to processes of active, distributed, and grassroots citizenship.

The curatorial project by the Landescape collective has allowed the MACA to establish itself not only as an exhibition space but, above all, as a center for artistic production, open to collaborations with the local productive fabric and the global influences brought by the hosted artists, who come from all over Europe.

Thanks to the PAC (Plan for Contemporary Art) funds from the Ministry of Culture for 2020/2021 and 2022/2023, the museum has produced works by internationally renowned artists, such as the video work Party TV by Andrea Masu and the monumental site-specific work Portals and Space-Time by Matilde Cassani Studio, with accessory works by Francesco Simeti and Andrea Sala.
