Descrizione

The memory on which Sabrina Notturno's works are nourished is not nostalgic, but rather saturated with visions based on a singular imagery: nocturnal worlds (nomen omen) in which nature is devoid of human presence or, on the contrary, in which obsolete mechanical machines, which have probably survived thanks to their poetry, are still at work with their heavy and noisy grace (steam trains, cable cars, Ferris wheels, barges with cranes...). Above all, moons of immense proportions and vortices of energy, columns of smoke, helices of DNA.
The work 'Ice Memory' was created in 2018 for the Coffee House of the Villa Pisani National Museum in Stra. The Coffee House is a small 18th-century architectural structure used as a tea room, built on a hollow artificial hill where blocks of ice were stored during the summer. Ice Memory" takes up the parallelepiped shape and shiny, smooth surface of these blocks. Fumes from the ice, which the artist recreated using a fog machine, exhaled into the glass room through the cracks of a grating in the floor.

Sabrina Notturno has worked with glass before, but this tall square column, on whose walls she has superimposed evocations of the villa and villa life, black silhouettes from the eighteenth century, mounds of clouds that show much but also conceal much, and the ever-present, alienating presence of her fawns, achieves a density of rare equilibrium.
A time machine, a shadow theatre, a mise-en-scène, it presents itself as a visionary device loaded with intimate and cultural cross-references, synthesising much of what the artist has created over the years, combining graphic and narrative invention, wandering through a rich and malleable visual unconscious, with exquisite technical and compositional research.
In this new installation, illuminated from within, the work enters into a dialogue with the objects of the Museum of Applied Art, in particular the antique porcelain exhibited a few metres away, opening up new possibilities for interpretation.
