For the twentieth edition of the Giornata del Contemporaneo AMACI, Trieste Contemporanea’s “Dialogues with the Art of Central Eastern Europe” put on the agenda the screening of a documentary film about the compelling story of György Kepes.
The mesmerizing narrative of New Media Art’s history across the 20th century is vividly portrayed on the cinema screen through the life completely immersed in modernism of this Hungarian painter, photographer, designer, writer, and polymath.
A prominent figure in the mid-20th-century art and design scene, Kepes is widely regarded today as the 'father of New Media Art’ and credited with popularizing the concept of "visual culture". Above all, Kepes’ name became synonymous with the intersection of art, science, and technology, due to his visionary program developed in the 1960s at MIT, where he founded the Center for Advanced Visual Studies (CAVS). This institution encouraged collaborative creations between artists and scientists – what he termed “interthinking” and “interseeing” –, fostering teamwork between humanists and natural scientists.

The film is proposed by Trieste Contemporanea for the AMACI Day 2024 in conjunction with the simultaneous American tour in Los Angeles (Art Center, Pasadena, on October 6) and in New York (Anthology Film Archives – where Mr Orosz will curate “Media Avant-Gardes”, a two-day film program centered around Kepes's cinema work alongside films by his students and associates at MIT, on October 12-13).
This film, which last October won the Spark Award for Best Film at the fifth DA2 Film Festival in Zagreb, is the first documentary film by Márton Orosz. It was in development since 2008 as an independent research project. After having been recipient in 2019 of the Structurist Creative Research Fellowship (SCRF) by the University of Saskatchewan (Canada), the director completed the film which was produced by the Canadian University in 2023.

Márton Orosz serves as the founder and Curator of the Collection of Photography and Media Arts at the Museum of Fine Arts – Hungarian National Gallery. Since 2014, he has been the Director of the Vasarely Museum in Budapest. He has curated numerous exhibitions across the globe, written books and articles on various art-related subjects. His research encompasses a wide range of fields, including light-based media, photography, avant-garde collecting, abstract geometric and kinetic art, computer art, motion picture, and animated film.
