The “Cervantes Itinerante” (Travelling Cervantes”) project by Mario Alvarez arrives in Rome to celebrate two important events: the 90th birthday of Sophia Loren and the 477th anniversary of birth of Miguel de Cervantes.
The artist unites these two celebrations in a performance that links literature, cinema and theater, in which Don Quixote meets the Dulcinea of Pozzuoli, Sophia Loren, the most beautiful in Italy and in the world.
And that is how Mario Alvarez unites Don Quixote with his beloved Dulcinea in an enchanting and ancient place in Rome, the Cryptoporticus of 50 BC, on the border between the Suburra district and the Imperial Forums, showing Cervantes this little-known film, The Man of La Mancha from 1972, a film adaptation of the Broadway musical, in which the great Italian actress played Dulcinea.
After the performance in Rome, Mario Alvarez will continue traveling around Italy until he will reache Naples, where Sophia Loren was born, to continue the celebrations in her hometown, where everyone loves her as Don Quixote loves his Dulcinea of Pozzuoli.
The artist Mario Alvarez has been carrying out his project “Cervantes Itinerante” since 2003, following in the footsteps of the great Spanish writer. Through historical-literary research and insights and artistic performances, Mario Alvarez documents and ideally bears witness to the strong bond between the great Spanish writer and Italy. The artist almost identifies with Cervantes in his love for Italy, its culture, its literature, its heritage of art and genius, and the shared biographical and emotional elements take over, transfiguring reality. And so Mario Alvarez “rides” with Cervantes across our peninsula.
The project traveled between Spain, France and Italy.
