"Nel divenire – identità tra vulcano e acqua"
The exhibition born from an idea by Oriana Tabacco and promoted by Basaltika, it intertwines the languages of contemporary art with those of science to narrate Etna and its multiple identities: not just a volcano, but a mountain perceived by the community as a "Great Mother" due to the fertility of its soil and the abundance of its water sources and thermal springs. This investigation features the scientific contribution of the INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology) and the University of Catania - Department of Geophysics and Volcanology.
Seven artists were invited to contribute to the dialogue with the places, where water and volcano become elements of research and connection with the site: Carmen Cardillo, Roberto Ghezzi, Giuseppe La Spada, Filippo La Vaccara, Giuseppe Livio, Maurizio Pometti, and Samantha Torrisi. They are joined by the contribution of four researchers for a scientific and historical investigation of the sites: Stefano Branca, researcher and director of the INGV Etna Observatory in Catania; Carmelo Ferlito, volcanologist (UniCt, Department of Geophysics and Volcanology); Giuseppe Filetti, geologist; and Francesco Lucifora, professor of Contemporary Art History (Academy of Fine Arts in Catania).
The "Nel divenire" project will be held at the historic Santa Tecla Water Consortium facility (Via Pereto 7, Acireale), a building constructed over a century ago, in 1915, on a coastal plain that harmoniously connects the spectacular Timpa di Acireale to the sea.
Scheduled for Contemporary Art Day is a collective artistic event, "Signals from Here - Fluid Intentions," curated by Francesco Lucifora. This informal yet experimental event will take place in two phases over the course of October 4, 2025.
