Armin Linke per la Diciassettesima Giornata del Contemporaneo, Jurong Bird Park, Singapore, 1999 – 2021

The greatest annual event Giornata del Contemporaneo dedicated to the art of our time and its audience, is promoted by AMACI with the support of General Direction for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.

For its 17th edition, held on Saturday, December 11th 2021, the 24 AMACI Museums and other realities such as museums, foundations, public and private institutions, art galleries, associations, studios and artists’ workshops, will open their space to the public, in order to celebrate contemporary art.

The seventeenth edition is finally back in attendance, maintaining a hybrid format, it will guarantee the development on a double track to encourage participation with online and offline proposals. The initiative will have as fil rouge the theme of the performative, in reference not only to the experience of the performer's corporeality on the stage, but especially to renegotiate a new presence with the audience through the sharing of space. The theme of the "performative" has been identified for its ability to be a catalyst and activator of relationships and actions that can generate new forms of involvement of the public and increase the social impact of the museum’s community. The associated museums will design and will propose for the Giornata del Contemporaneo, in a coordinated way, activities around this theme.

After the suspension of the ordinary format last year, caused by the repercussions due to the health emergency, the Directors of the associated museums have decided to entrust again to an artist the creation of the guide image of the event, choosing Armin Linke (Milan, 1966) as the representative of this edition of the restart.

The project therefore resumes to involve an Italian artist of international fame in the conception of the Giornata del Contemporaneo’ s guide image, which in the past few years was created by Michelangelo Pistoletto (2006), Maurizio Cattelan (2007), Paola Pivi (2008), Luigi Ontani (2009), Stefano Arienti (2010), Giulio Paolini (2011), Francesco Vezzoli (2012), Marzia Migliora (2013), Adrian Paci (2014), Alfredo Pirri (2015), Emilio Isgrò (2016), Liliana Moro (2017), Marcello Maloberti (2018) and Eva Marisaldi (2019).

The image selected for the Seventeenth Giornata del Contemporaneo, Jurong Bird Park, is a theatrical staging, a display of elements which represent a concept of natural landscape. In modernist architectural fiction, a lush nature, apparently spontaneous, which welcomes multicolored parrots is steeped with natural and artificial elements, starting from the reinforced concrete mushroom which imitates the cozy wooden refuge for the birds that are the protagonists of the photography. With its unmistakable ability to seize the reality that surrounds us, Linke opens a profound reflection on human actions and places heavily, anthropized as Jurong Bird Park (Singapore), the largest bird park in the world, in which nature is bent at the service of man and its unstoppable wish of appropriation.

With a multifaceted program which involves not only big cities, but also smaller ones, which have always played an active role in the event, AMACI wants to emphasise, in this single day, the important function that contemporary art plays in the cultural, social and economic development of our country.

Giornata del Contemporaneo - Italian Contemporary Art returns, thanks to the collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, extending this initiative outside national borders with the participation of the MAECI foreign network. From Monday 6th to Saturday 11th December 2021, Italian Embassies, Consulates and Institutes of Culture, promote Italian creativity through a schedule of activities in a hybrid format.
