THE NIVOLA MUSEUM IN ORANI JOINS AMACI

BRINGING THE ASSOCIATION TO 28 MUSEUMS

AMACI is pleased to announce that the Nivola Museum in Orani (Nuoro) has officially joined its network of associated museums.

The decision, approved by the Members’ Assembly in April 2026, is based on recognition of the museum’s growth and the high quality of its cultural, exhibition and research activities. The Museum’s admission has been regarded as a significant added value for AMACI, capable of making an authoritative contribution to strengthening the Italian contemporary art system, with particular attention to the territory in which it operates.

Managed by the foundation of the same name, the Nivola Museum was established in 1995, a few years after the artist’s death, with the aim of safeguarding and promoting his research and legacy. Over the years, projects have focused on his work or on contemporary artists whose paths intersected with his, alongside exhibitions and residencies which, through an exploration of contemporary artistic languages, continue to cultivate subtle yet meaningful connections with his intellectual legacy.

The permanent collection, displayed on a rotating basis, includes hundreds of sculptures, paintings, drawings and many examples of the celebrated sandcasts, all bearing witness to every stage of his reflection and multidisciplinary experimentation, which marked an important chapter in modern explorations of the relationship between sculpture, environment and design practice. Through its ongoing activities, the Nivola Museum supports collective cultural growth and sustains the history and memory of the territory that embraces it.

With this new membership, the Nivola Museum becomes the second Sardinian museum to join the Association after MAN in Nuoro, further expanding AMACI’s regional presence, which now comprises a total of 28 associated museums.

“On behalf of the entire Association,” declares Lorenzo Balbi, President of AMACI, “I would like to warmly welcome the Nivola Museum. We are delighted to include it in our network and are confident that its membership will represent a significant contribution to the life of the Association, bringing the perspective of a territory of great cultural and geographical importance, broadening our outlook and fostering new connections.

We look forward with great interest to the opportunities that this membership opens up and hope to develop together new projects, opportunities for dialogue and shared initiatives, for the benefit of the entire Italian contemporary art system.”

The Nivola Museum’s admission to AMACI represents an important step in strengthening collaboration among public museum institutions dedicated to the promotion of contemporary art, with the aim of creating new synergies and encouraging the dissemination of artistic culture throughout Italy.

MUSEO NIVOLA

The Nivola Museum in Orani, in the province of Nuoro, is dedicated to the life and work of Costantino Nivola (Orani 1911 – East Hampton 1988). Managed by the foundation bearing his name, it was established in 1995, a few years after the artist’s death, with the aim of safeguarding and promoting his research and legacy. The building complex housing the museum, divided into three main structures set along the hillside overlooking the town near the Su Càntaru spring, is the result of an architectural plan designed by Peter Chermayeff and subsequently developed over time by Gianfranco Crisci and Alessandro Floris. Conceived both as a monographic museum and as a vibrant laboratory where art, architecture, nature and landscape exist in harmonious dialogue, it plays a crucial role in research centred on Nivola’s work while also serving a civic function by engaging local communities in programmes that, in keeping with the master’s teachings, encourage participation and activate public space.
